Alright, let's clear up some shit. I'm not exactly an expert on this kind of stuff, but from what I understand:
When modeling for games, you usually make a high-poly model first(which is referenced in the article), which usually has hundreds of thousands to millions of polygons. These models then get used for normalmap baking and other shit, and then you make a low-poly version of the high-poly model to be used in-game. So if they needed to make relatively higher-poly models for better hardware, they can simply refer back to the high-poly models they made before and make higher-poly low-poly versions of those models. But, the problem is that these current in-game, low-poly models aren't optimized enough for the 3DS hardware, and it lags the game. Not only that, but these "future-proofed" models, as they are in XY/SM, aren't high-poly enough for the current gen. They would probably need a bump for the Switch, from 10-20k counts to 20k-30k counts.
