Mob Psycho is a great example of this -- I mean, it has a sort of OK plot, but it's a very character-driven series, and if these characters were as static and expressionless as most anime models, folks like Reigan or Dimple wouldn't be nearly as endearing and as a result, the series' tone, action, and even plot would suffer greatly.
In any case, you're making a dumb concession here: not only do the new designs animate better, they also look better -- they're less rigid and angular and they allow for more evocative expressions and poses. The only reason people don't like the new style is some stupid, slavish devotion to otherwise fairly consistent character designs. They're spooked because the designs aren't familiar, and they've literally grown up with Pokémon sameface for 20 years.
