Some of these places seems too small to be gyms, What could they be for?

The only one I disagree with is the Mt. Hokulani one. It is not a square ready for construction but there is no other place in Alola. But there are commonly Lumber nearby the squares and the only place to have the Lumber but not by a square is outside the malasada shop at the Battle Royal town.

My prediction

Gyms in the post game
You can customize them like secret bases in ORAS with decorations and place mook trainers
Then you can assign the leader made up from a pool of Trial Captians whom you recruit during the main story while you meet them doing their Trials

They either have default teams, or you can assign them your own Pokemon and then share your gyms online via QR code for other trainers to take on

The more I think about it, the better it fits for the gyms, as they're all relatively close to their respective trial sites

So the gyms could be:
Illima - Hau'oli City
Lana - Heahea City
Mallow - Konikoni City
Kiawe - Royal Avenue
Acerola - Ula Ula Island sea
Ya boi Guzma - Po Town / Sophocles - Mt.Hokulani
Ryugi/Mina - Seafolk Village

Sophocles/Guzma and Mina/Ryugi/ can be either or, since the other can be battled in the postgame of Sun and Moon anyways

I doubt they'll do Po town since USUM is a retelling of SM Team Skull will most likely still be there and they won't have a gym. Maybe. Besides, it still doesn't have a plot or lumber.

Oh shit actually the one this one is forgetting is maybe in Tapu village, next to the pokemon centre. Although, why would they build again there? Tapu Bulu doesn't seem to mind the Pokemon centre..
