I'm actually on the boat that thinks the story is utter garbage. At best it's just an incentive to get players to do tasks, and at worst I feel like I'm reading a dA fanfic. Constant mood whiplash, stock anime trope characters, things being needlessly convoluted like generic time travel in Explorers and going to hell and back because Yveltal pulled some Medusa shit on you. All of it's so stupid.
That said, as a roguelike, the series is a good way to ease people into the genre. Blue/Red Rescue Team especially, for its auto-quicksave feature and generally being more grueling in terms of recruitment and item mamagement.
Even if the plot was good, I doubt it'd do anything for me because I'm stuck as a starter instead of a mon I actually like.
