ANY 3DS family model can have what are known as IPS and TN screens in any combination (tough the touch screen is usually TN it seems). IPS have better viewing angles and color display than TN which is likely where you're seeing the difference.
The 5 of the 6 I have and have tested, for example, are:
3DS XL - Dual IPS.
3DS XL - Dual TN.
N3DS XL - Dual IPS.
N3DS XL - IPS upper TN lower.
N3DSXL - Dual TN.
You probably had an upper TN screen and now have an upper IPS screen.
The easiest test page is
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php. If you can see the black squares labeled 4 and above you've got a TN screen and 8 and above is IPS.
