The pattern on the head here is actually a reference to the Island formation in Alola in this game. You might notice its all stuck together.

This is because all the Islands are meshed together.
Think of Pangea.

Thats why Necrozma's face in SM is all spread apart.

This is also why you haven't seen the map on the inside of the box arts like with the previous ones as they don't want to spoil what the islands look like.
