Is it possible they brought back only few characters but from each region (well except Johto but some people count Red and Blue representing both Kanto and Johto) and from many different trainer classes to hint at Pokemon World Tournament in Ultra Sun and Moon?

No. It's fucking nothing and it will be fucking nothing forever. Battle Frontier and World Tournament were pretty much the best post game additions they've made in the past and they droped both of them in the following games out of absolutely unexplainable reasons. GF basically only exists to disappoint at this point.
