Why did TPC force the series to go super self-contained world with like no references to reality like the early days of the series? Shit like Lt. Surge being the Lightning American or real animals actually existing in the old media, why did they change that?

Because as the Pokémon world got bigger and Pokémon equivalents of real world animals/regions came to be they no longer need to rely on reality for references.
