Either laddering will happen naturally (never gone past abut 1,600 on Showdown but in-game I end up being 1 - 3 in my country and top 100 in the world when I actually try) or the team will end up having a lot of kinks worked out as I get wrecked over time and it will forcibly happen via changing moves, builds, etc. as I come up against problems.
Nothing to be anxious about if your intent is to have fun.
