Rock is minerals, crystals and boulders.
Ground is earth, sand, or, well, ground in general.
They're two different things, but even then there's a huge amount of ground/rock mons.

I've been playing since gen 1 and this still bothers me a little. It bothered me when they made steel too. Then they pulled fairy out of fucking nowhere. If anything ground should be a sub type of rock along with steel and not actual types but moves that have those types.

Because Ground encompasses things like dirt, sand, and more dirt while Rock encompasses boulders, gems, and other rock stuff.
It's really just what you walk on and what you don't walk on, which is why it called the GROUND type and why rock types are commonly paired with ground.

Sure, both have the same effect but it makes more sense for totodile to learn leer compared to tail whip.

Just to elaborate, if you check both move's contest condition thing, leer is cool while tail whip is cute.

so for a i guess cool evo line like totodile line, it just make more sense for it to learn leer. Feraligatr tail wagging cutely is just funny to think about imo.

Combining the type and calling it "earth" or even keeping the name ground wouldn't fit pokemon like minior or corsola very well. And if you called it rock it would be weird calling palossand or wiscash "rock" types when there's nothing about their designs that implies rocks.

Rocks are made out of ground but it's also hard. Ground is more like fluid.
You hit Rock with Fighting attack - it's smashed. You hit Ground - it's still ground.
You hit Steel with Rock - Rock is smashed. You hit Steel with Ground - Steel falls apart

What the fuck do you even mean? Shadow-type is something from the Gamecube games that was its own bizarre thing different from Dark. Bird was just an alpha designation for what would become Flying-type. There are no Wood or Magic or Nuclear types or anything
