I don't know why this seem strange to people. Usual Pokemon evolution is one-of-a-time-thing. Maybe evolution is painful but the Pokemon bears it because it will only happen once ever.

Because XY hammered it in how mega evolution works because of "close bonds" and how it's a great thing and a testament to your ability as a trainer if you can get your pokemon to mega evolve.

Then SM drops that you're basically torturing your pokemon, going against everything previously established. It's definitely going to raise some brows.
