It's entirely possible the announcement was a public confirmation that Switch Development was happening.
It's probably been ongoing ever since Gen 6, which is why Gen 7 feels like complete garbage and USUM has absolutely no notable news, even by 3rd Version Standards.

i guess magikarp jump counts since it was released after SM and has a lot of references to the game, but pokken DX, i feel like it's more like it got a SM DLC pack more than it's a 7 gen spin off.
we've yet to get a true gen 7 spin off, such as a Pokemon mystery dungeon or pokemon dash/rangers/pinball with gen 7 elements such as Z moves or alola direct references.

Alola is like a vacation arc and they are probably saving all the spinoffs for gen 8. It doesn't have fossil Pokémon just like johto and johto only got 3 spin-offs.

That's pretty normal. Traditionally, outside of unannounced mythicals, the TCG burns through the entire generation in about 3 sets. XY was the only oddball of the bunch, holding off on Zygarde and a bunch of Mega Evolutions for some reason.

Nah. USUM leaker mentioned new mons, forms, and UBs. The suspicious lack of a national dex and the amount of pages in the USUM guide (hinting at a national dex included) mean we pretty much could go full Gen 7.5 and have a third Mythical.

It's this line of thinking that makes me think the "leak" that was here about the Switch getting a port was correct and they're just waiting for Pokkén to be released to announce it and not take it's release fanfare.

Last month announcement would be kind of hype for Switch owners and it would give us information about precisely how far along they are in terms of learning Switch development as well as start pushing people to purchase one for Pokémon since it would obviously be better feature wise while not leaving out the 3DS entirely.

Telling us of Gen 8 could easily be what they thought to be the safer play since a game with no information obviously wouldn't take as much away from Pokkén as announcing a Switch port for the main series a couple months after it.
