If I discover one of a species of lizard right this second I do not necessarily have enough information to classify it as male or female.
Gender Unknown is the correct classification because it's simply not been studied enough to know, not that it isn't male or female.
You really need to science better kiddo. Everything about the study of Pokémon is very much like our study of animals.
How they explained the Fairy-Type being a perfect example of this. It wasn't that Fairy-Types didn't exist all along, it's that they hadn't been defined. That's why some who already existed were changed. After more thorough testing it was found they had been mistyped. Just like many animals who have wrongly been classified as being related to a species they weren't which genetic testing finally clarified.
Gender Unknown is a more correct way to do it, rather than, say, labeling it Normal-Type or just a Steel-Type when you actually don't know that to be true.
