Any move that either has a equivalent or superior item counterpart. So basically all healing moves, all set up moves that don't increase to separate stats and so on. That way you have room for four other moves while you still have the neglected moves accessible through items.

Status moves are great for catching mons and are overall also pretty helpful.
Not as much as in competitive but they still have their use.

Almost all non-damaging moves. The way in-game battles work, there's no reason to run anything other than STAB + coverage + some stat-up move.

Recovery moves and healing move aren't too bad because you can easily encounter a wild Pokémon, heal up with a recovery move/remove all status from your team, and leave the battle with a small amount of damage done to your Pokémon since wild Pokémon aren't too strong and bright. Even stat lowering moves are okay, because the opponent rarely switches out.

Hidden Power is great in current games, but it was pretty shitty in older ones. In gen 2 and 3, it would flip between a physical or special move based on the type, so most Pokemon had a 50-50 chance of getting a useless version. Up until gen 6, its BP was also based on IVs, so you could waste the TM and end up with a 30BP version of the movie.

Basically any status, setup, stat-raising, stat-lowering, weather, or healing move.

In fact, with the exception of legendary catching and Battle Subway/Tree/Tower/Frontier/etc., there is no reason to do anything besides use your most effective attack.
