They only use female characters that appear in the story regardless of which gender you pick.

Misty is a Gym Leader.
May is a rival.
Dawn is Rowan's assistant.
Hilda/Rosa only appear in the Battle Subway, Iris is a Gym Leader.
Serena is a rival.
The plot is centered around Lillie.

So, Iris was chosen over Hilda, and Lillie was chosen over Chicken.

XY had Serena as a deuteragonist (though her subplot felt like an afterthought and took a backseat to the shipping cancer), and SM is pushing Lillie as a deuteragonist

I don't really think so with Lillie so far. She gets slightly more focus than the other friends, but not really enough to stand out from them much. She just kind of fades into the background when any other friend is being focused on, too.

The same was true of Serena for XY's first 40 episodes, in fact, Serena stood out less than Lillie did at that time.

Serena didn't battle much, so there was no reason for her to have a full team.

Contests involved both performing and actual battles, Serena's thing, showcases, only involved performing.

serena's pokemon get experience from performances, there's nothing stoping them to evolve or serena to catch more pokemon
