Rock and ground only share 2 weaknesses and one type they hit for super effective damage. The conception of them being pretty much the same comes from the overabundance of rock/ground pokémon.

Rock/Grass is a good combination! Rock side loses weakness to water, ground and grass, Grass side looses weakness to fire, poison and flying.
Cradily is a great defensive mon!
Grass/Fighting is lame if you're not fast enough, gets destroyed too easily.

Because GF's way of balancing is to just nerf something into oblivion so that it will never be used again.

In Gen I it was all about Rock, Normal, and Psychic. And look what happened to all three types in the following gens. Fuck, they tried to do the same thing with Dragons in Gen VI and it nearly worked for anything that doesn't rhyme with Archomp, Gayquaza or Arizard.
