Pokemon is set in a "new Earth" planet colonized by descendants of a post apocalyptic world hoping to start anew. Some creatures native to the planet were existing Pokemon (Machoke, Jynx, Kabutops etc.,) but some of the bacteria they manifested infected some of the native animals generation to generation to the point they've mutated into something else that we recognize as the pokemon of today.
