Masuda wasn't in charge back then

Masuda didn't become the main director until Gen 3, up until then he was only in charge of composing the soundtrack.

His gimmicks were certainly profitable a few years ago.
Nintendo got more money just from Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Nintendogs and Brain Training than they got from years of Mario, Zelda and Metroid.
