I've never encountered battery life as a substantial problem, but if it drops below 50% I just charge it while playing.
I'm surprised to hear that yours creaks in your hands. If that's not an exaggeration, you may want to look into that, but perhaps I just don't use mine in handheld as often as you do, since you said you never dock yours.
Before I got a case I put the Joy-cons in one pocket and the Switch itself in the other. Not as convenient as a DS, but it fit.
