If we're going by usefulness? Yeah, pretty much. Hawlucha and Talonflame were semi-useful, at least. Noivern and Goodra were complete jobbers though.
I was basing it off of the overall species, not how each performed. Kalos is definitely not the best overall if it's based on performance.

Also probably helps that Ash was finally written as somewhat competent during XY. If he'd had some of his previous teams with his XY mindset he might have done even better.

I have no problems it losing against a Pokemon that is around it's own level and battle experience but often it lost to a Pokemon that was remarkably weaker then it.

Yeah exactly, obviously from a pure game standpoint the stats stay static but in the anime it's living breathing world so maybe Ash didn't get enough sleep last night or Pikachu's hungry or whatever.

I've noticed that they usually write around it though by having Pikachu visibly struggle with an opponent, then the battle's interrupted. A few episodes later he recoups the loss so it's like "oh yeah he would have won anyway" but they get to keep the drama and hype up some new mon, usually a starter.

that's for sure and that is why Pikachu will always be there. Ash would never let it go and always have it on the team. I know all of this I just don't swallow it as easily as I should. I just wanted to see if he actually needed it, I think he would get by easily with it.

Personally I haven't used a Pikachu in game since Red/Blue/Green/Yellow and one of the reasons I don't watch the Anime is because of Pikachu. I'd be happy if Pikachu was there but was never used in official battles and was a traveling companion.

Honestly he doesn't. Both lists posted that didn't include Pikachu are still teams that he could win with.

He's just always gonna use it because it's a part of him at this point. Sun/Moon was their chance to switch protagonists if they wanted to but they didn't.

Switching Protagonist is not the answer. But advancing Ash and Chu with age and bringing in a new character as the new young Protagonist and having them share the focus/storyline is a much better solution.

Ash and Pikachu, the Mascots, are still there while a fresh storyline can be introduced.

Ash could have been a mentor figure to Lillie and have her be the new protag with alola vulpix as her iconic thing.

She's so new to the entire universe of pokemon that she can't even touch them at first, you can't ask for much more than that as a starting point for a new lead.

And really, she'd just be the focus for the season with Ash essentially being on vacation and along for the adventure.

I'm sure this idea was considered and shot down because of hard numbers and market research though.

I am not sure I am with you on that one.

Another thing they could do is split the episode count. Have Ash and Pikachu show and then have the game protagonist show. With the two meeting at the end in the Pokemon league.

We may actually get some feeling that the two mediums are actually part of the same franchise.
