I'm going to strongly agree with you here. A quadruped swordsman is rarely explored as a concept. While it is prone to immense criticism, I really like how they went with a more "animalistic" body type when you would expect a typical anthromorph. Makes it feel original and interesting.

We got five quadruped swordsmen in a single generation, and all of them missed the mark. There are ways to do the concept justice. They have yet to accomplish this.

I would have been more open to it if it hadn't come after two bipedal pre-evolutions. If that was the concept, it should have been more clear in Oshawatt and Dewott.

Looks fucking stupid because they had no intention of making it quadrupedal. It's swords don't fit in their sheaths and it can't fucking pull them out. It's far and away my favorite Gen V starter in theory but it fucking ruins itself

>Oshawott was designed to be the "cute" one of them as well as acting as a "den mother figure" to the other two. Dewott was also the last of the second form of the starters to be designed. In an interview with Ken Sugimori, he stated that they were concerned on what to make Oshawott evolve into. After watching sea otters at a zoo, he decided to make the third evolution based on a sea lion, with Oshawott's shell turned into a sword.

There was no intent for a badass Sea Lion Samurai. Which is a shame, if planned from the start rather than twisted to fit that because it was by far the least popular and last designed it might have turned out well.

Its more of the animal than the samurai motif though. The final form was obviously going to be a military general to conclude the samurai idea.

Stick to any other design then, there's plenty for you to enjoy. It's a very unique concept, I'm happy Game Freak made an attempt at it. There are enough Lucario clones already.
