Lastly, those arms don't look like they're capable of punching.

Only nitpicking because in those cases the "realism" has made it less realistic of a functional version of Poliwrath.
I actually love how it looks, but I'd call it more of a horror version than realistic.

That's the problem I have with him honestly. He tries too hard to make them look like existing creatures with minor things copy pasted around. What especially irks me is he does write some neat lore stuff explaining a lot of it, but despite it being a world with technology like Pokeballs and such, he refuses to make Pokemon that are inorganic or have inorganic parts retain that side of them.

I much prefer these kinds of realistic Pokemon, that change textures and proportions (such as making cartoon fins look more like real fins and making heads less cartoony) rather than modifying a real world animal to look like a Pokemon.

It's more realistic this way. It's like that Arvalis guy, the goal is reimagining the pokemon as a real being. Shrimp are real and can match the colors in a cool way, and since hedgehogs don't actually exist it's a shrimp.

I just don't understand why these are so hyped up when they look awful. The weird, human-like eyes look uncanny and creepy next to the nice, realistic scales and fur. These could all be fixed just by making the eyes more bestial.

Blastoise still looks creepy but that's because of the structure around the eye itself. It's too rounded. You'd have to redo the whole face. The eye is too depressed. There's no real quick fix for that

I think venusaur should have more pupil showing and less iris. I think it would look better with less iris. It might give it more of a prehistoric wild look that I think looks better with venusaur to counteract the weight.

I get that, but if you're making Pokémon "realistic," if you're giving them realistic fur and scales, I don't see why you'd stop at the eyes, especially if the human-like eyes look so ridiculous when the Pokémon aren't as cartoonish.

The guy's entire project is explaining how Pokémon might plausibly exist in the real world (the real world without, say, ghosts or sentient magnets). The way he explains more bizarre Pokémon (like haunted trees or living magnets or ghosts) is that they're actual animals that've been mistaken for supernatural phenomena.

They aren't. An octopus breathing oxygen is more believable than a tree with a brain and all the other needed organs to be sentient.

Gastly's huge eyes always looked like butterfly wings to me. I know it’s classified as the “gas pokemon” but I always thought it would be neat if deep inside that gas are the remnants of a burnt out skull being used as a tether to our world by an ethereal being of some sort, and the “eyes” are an intimidation tactic. Squint your eyes if you can't see it.

Sure he changes the entire "species" of the pokemon, but he's not drawing what realistic pokemon would look like in the pokemon universe, he's drawing them in a way where they could actually exist in our world. There's a lot of pokemon that would make no sense in our world.

Personally I think he does the best job at creating realistic pokemon, 80% of other artist's realistic pokemon look like shit, they're just drawing the pokemon itself with texture on it.
