Fairly certain it's just to tie this hiker popularity contest thing in with the newest games. This whole promotion is about hikers and they happened to have a new scene in the games with a hiker, it's not at all saying trials are gone just because one has been changed.

They still had buildings. There are a handful of new buildings, not enough for gyms.
Trials remain, get use to it, gyms aren't happening, it's not Alola's thing, same reason there isn't new Mega's, it's not Alola's thing, Z-Moves are.

No they weren't, they were programmed late into development, doesn't mean they didn't already have the concepts and characters, it just means they didn't put them into the games until near the end of developing them.

Trials, Totem Pokemon and Kahuna's are superior to gyms, the issue is that the trials themselves were garbage and need work, which hopefully this game will do

Hiker Dave already being on the mountain might show that it works different but we won't know

One thing I wouldn't mind them doing is making you battle the Trial Captain at some point during the trial. Like maybe right before you face the Totem, as a final test of sorts. Not only would it give the captains more to do, not to mention add another component to the trial, it would also be a nice addition for those who miss traditional Gym battles.

I think trials are a great concept, so it wouldn't be a lot of work just to flesh them out a bit.

This is really the core issue with trials, not the totems or kahunas or the existence of these things. They just need to fix the trials themselves and we all know they're mostly shit because they were programmed during the debugging phase without staff and resources.
