That said, I recognize May as both the benchmark and most versatile pokegirl. She's imo, the first female Gamefreak put serious attention to in designing. Because of that, she seems to strike the right balance or feminine, cute, and tomboy. She's the perfect female avatar for all the little details placed around her design. Her hair is long on the sides, but short on the back, she has a waist back pack for portability and style, gloves (atleast in her old design), glorious splats, and a bandanna (bow is cute, but not as great as the bandanna). Had she not debuted during the decline of pokemania, she'd probably be more popular than she already is. And her popularity is already considerable as is.
This only applies to girl characters and not the poke ladies. I think they have their own level of appeal.
