It can play ds games.
Also has shit like Fossil fighters. Pheonix wright. Monsterhunter. Animal crossing. Bravely default. Dragon quest, Fire emblem, SMT, Xenoblade cronicles. Yokai watch if ya into that.
Theres some pretty nice E shop games as well.

But what is there for the Switch right now that would make it a console seller?
Following your own rules.
No mario, zelda Or pokemon.

My main issue with buying a new nintendo console is it's not Backwards compatible, the games never go down in price and it's mainly a mario machine.
When it comes to the handhelds they could churn out small games fast. Since it didn't have to look amazing.
Other than smash/mariokart/splatoon/MH.
I didn't really touch my wiiu.
And with the new one coming to PC and not the Switch. And the thing requiring paid online. I don't really want it.

Getting there but not yet.
You know what Nintendo could do, to fix everyones complaints?
Make a portable version.
Nintendo loves making addons.
So make a portable screen.
Little bit smaller, so it fits in pockets. Built in controllers.And a fold over part that acts as both a stand and screen protector.
You would need the main switch to use it. But it would stop people complaining. And I wouldn't mind buying that.
Bonus points if they add BC to 3ds games.

I have been thinking of getting one.
But I don't care about mario.
I already have splatoon and mario kart on my wiiu.
I'd just be buying it for zelda. And even then I don't even want that.
What does it have that I can't get on pc or other consoles.
I can't carry it around with me, unless i walk around with a purse or some shit. And even then I would have to buy a case so it doesn't get fucked up. And then i have to buy a new console, because I don't think they sell spare screens.

I love my Switch. But if you don't enjoy the games on it, don't get it yet. There's a chance of a price cut before Pokemon comes out. Just wait until it has games that you genuinely want.
There are plenty of exclusives announced and released, but if you're not interested in them it's really not worth getting yet.

Switch is portable.
Switch is their new handheld.
Why do you think Nintendo combined their console and handheld departments? There won't be any exclusively home consoles from them, and there won't be any exclusively handheld consoles from them anymore. Barring Switch variations, of course. Switch Mini is still possible.

Switch Mini doesn't exist, but I like the concept as an entry point. If you don't like the Switch's docking concept, a Switch Mini could be nice. Or even just a regular Switch sold without the dock and without the charger, since it's just a USB-C anyways.
Don't think they'll introduce BC for (3)DS in any form since it'd just be a variation.
Yeah, I understand the online thing. Unless Pokemon is excluded, it'll suck to only pay for Pokemon. I have other games I'll be paying for online, but I'd be pissed if I was paying $20 just to play Pokemon online.

Because /vp/ isn't one person. Some people want it to stay on exclusive handhelds, which are being discontinued, and some people wanted it on home consoles, which are also being discontinued. Now we have a hybrid that's more powerful than any previous Nintendo home console and portable, but people still aren't pleased because it's not one or the other.
Most people are excited, though.

How would you make an "add-on" to make the Switch be smaller?
