Some Pokemon evolutionary lines are based on real life concepts that belong to the same "family." Think Weedle line = hymenopterans, Remoraid line = projectile weaponry, etc.—different yet interrelated bases. This applies to Pikipek as well in that Woodpeckers and Toucans belong to the Order Piciformes. However, I wouldn't mind if Toucannon were standalone or evolved from something else entirely, either.

I want to say that the 3D models are what ruined this line, but it was really all downhill after the gen 2 sprites. I don't understand why the posterboy of ghost-types is not only not allowed to be darkly coloured anymore, but the palest, lightest purple known to man.
