Why bring up Mega Evolution? I mean, it's cool that Brock and Misty can do it, but why would the show bring it up if not to pull a Dusk Lycanroc on us and tease new Megas/focus on Megas in USM?

Dude, Misty's had a gyarados for ages now, she got one in Pokemon chronicles and it showed up in AG when she had her cameo episode.

Ash is going to get fucking bodied, Gyarados is more op in the anime than the game and now hers is a fucking mega.

This. As much as I love Megas, I think this was just done to show off the trainers and make them look stronger. Megas are the easiest way to do this.

On the plus side, it shows that they realize how hype Megas are.

Which is why we had Tai and Sora in the movie and the seiyuus for Matt and Gabumon stating in interviews that Sora done goofed by going for Matt instead of Tai.
