Why do all the old characters look like shit? The gen 7 cast look fine, even the Oak lookalike looks good.

Why the hell would they do that? You even got the director stating outright in an interview a couple months ago that the entire TV show was one continuity (and the new movie was another) just to hammer this into the heads of that one person that was still screeching about "potential retcon".

To be fair, they can't really write anything about the leagues since there's no league in Alola. It feels more like them struggling to come up with SOMETHING to write that sounds more impressive than "goes to school".

They can easily keep claiming he wants to be a pokemon master like they have for 6 gens now. It's a shitty ambiguous goal that works for everything so why not. They can also easily say Kukui organized a league tournament in Alola (since they really don't use the same concept in the anime as in the games) and Ash can go lose that too

Because SM uses a different artstyle. SM characters look fine because were designed for this art style. Others were not so you perceive it as strange because it's not what you're used to.

I mean, the Trial Captains looks like their game counterpart's official art, if a bit simplified. Brock, Ash and Misty have these exaggerated design changes that look pretty different from the rest of the SM cast.

Maybe the magazine just took awkward shots and art, and they look much better in motion.

It's literally what they did with James. Completely redesigned how his hair looks for absolutely no reason beyond "change for the sake of change". He still looks okay once you get used to it, but it's so horrendously unnecessary.
