And it's only for two episodes. After that, Ash and co. will be back in Alola and the show will resume as normal.

It does, though. Ash's Island Challenge + the shit going on with Lillie. And Team Skull has been around since the first episode.

It has more of a plot than XY at least, where Team Flare didn't show up until near the very end.

Anime's 20th Anniversary, and Gen 7 is all about that Kanto Pandering.
Though really this is more for the Japanese Kiddies considering the only means to see them without the internet is to catch reruns of Kanto Episodes on the Sunday Morning Variety Show, and this would give a modern spin for them to enjoy.
