Why couldn't they do 3v3? Right, because they didn't think to create a method for them to set the rules to allow multiple mega stones (or just force mega-evolve) and are too stupid to release an update patch.

That said, it allows for very little strategy, making battles not very interesting. It's literally rock/paper/scissors: The Game.

No items, no switching, battle is decided at preview (even more than usual) constant mega evolution animations, everything will run at least one OHKO move to try to luck out in a bad matchup (making it the biggest crutch since double protect).

I guess I might give it a shot due to the little amount of planning it'll require, and I'm training mons for the tree anyway.

This is Mega Metagross' meta. Can't be OHKO'd by any variant of Salamence or Garchomp, OHKOing both in the process.

- Ice Punch (Garchomp, Salamence)
- Meteor Mash (Gardevoir, Altaria)
- Earthquake (CharX)
- Stone Edge (CharY)

Loses to memey shit and unused megas like Blastoise, but is easily the best in the format. Gengar might cause it problems though, being one of the few to outspeed it and have a STAB Super effective attack

I was thinking that since it's 1vs1, focus sash could be good but because of the low amount of available pokemon and because of mega Kangaskhan it does't seems like it.
Plus even if it allow you to survive one hit, against most mega it will be hard to outspeed and 2HK0 them.
I guess it can be used on Sceptile with endeavor and Quick attack but doesn't work against Mega Kang, faster pokemons with priority (aqua jet Sharpedo after a speed boost), the 3 Ghost type pokemons and bulky pokemons that will hold leftovers or sitrus/pinch berries (although I don't think a lot of pokemons will use them).
It could also be used with counter/mirror coat but it's more situational. Swampert and Blastoise (if Gen1 VC pokemons are allowed) can learn both moves so that's something to keep in mind.

what about mega camerupt as a metagross counter? it resists steel and can take any of metagross' coverage moves, and flamethrower and earth power both ohko mgross

Camerupt will probably be surprisingly good but Metagross, Salamence and Charizard (the only truly unpredictable mega) will be the best. Camerupt and the water megas are kind of anti meta

There's enough unique megas to choose from. Mostly the ones that you never see in-game until you get the mega stone in the post-game and were never really shilled by GF.
The boring megas are those featured in in-game battles (lucario, gardevoir, metagross, gallade, etc), starters and legends, as well as the few that are actually viable in the meta.
