The issue with bank dex and not in game dex was that it limited the amount of Pokémon available in game to whatever the region dex was, and that really cut down the options compared to past games

At least that problems fixed now, meaning we should be getting more of a variety of Pokémon in the areas and maybe legendaries too

SM only had the region dex through the whole game

Oras did it best, when you beat the 8th gym you get the national dex and soaring at the same time which opens up a huge variety of options, and all the trainers you fight on victory road aren't limited to the Hoenn dex anymore

I still think USUM will have only regional dex. Two reasons

1. It makes it easier for GF to control the metagame. They allow selected Pokemon to the VGC.
2. The way Pokedex works in this game. Each time you're obtaining new mon the dex recognizes it and does that little animation with Pokemon in very specific poses are added to the list. Some are on the same page because of the evolution line, some are just seen as counterparts (Miltank and Tauros). I doubt GF will do that for the entire national dex

it also had the QR island scanner, which was a pretty neat way to get some cool gen V pokemon, but yeah, it was really fucking limited, hopefully it gets fixed in USM

Yep and they're always fucking awful. Letting the genies, Heatran and Cresselia back into VGC will be a mistake.
The best way to have a good VGC is to have a restricted regional dex format. This year's and 2014 both used it and they were far more diverse and interesting than 2015's (national dex excluding box legends and mythicals) and 2016 (Primal shit show)

I see, but this could also be a thing without the national dex being necesary, like the aforementioned example in SM.

I agree, a mega and legendary free meta would be really interesting. It'd probably boil down to staples -
Garchomp/Salamence /Rotom/Amoonguss/Arcanine but there are a lot more ways to handle them than shit like auto terrain and CHALK, which require you bring your own terrain and usually your own CHALK variant.

Not sure if it's as marketable though, and how that ruleset would be defined. No special Pokémon? Must have hatched from an egg? Not sure.

I think Dex Poses might be gone now if we're getting the national dex, they might just display the models themselves, kind of a shame since I liked them but not a huge loss

Reminder the only reason SM didn't have a National Dex was they wanted all new Dex entries and the hack writer that was in charge of them left Game Freak before the game was finished, this is also why the Regional Dex is smaller than the Kalos one.

Nah. Just because the first four regions were based off of one country in the real world doesn't mean subsequent region based off of different countries irl are in different countries in game. Kalos, Unova, and Alola are not different countries, they're still refered to as just different regions.

If the national 'dex really is in, then there's a bunch of brand-new Mega entries as in, new entries for the Megas that already exist but weren't initially available in SM, not brand-new Megas period that they'll have to write, as well as several alternate forms.
I want to see what bullshit they come up with for Mega Tyranitar. Tyranitar's entries are pretty over-the-top already, so it'll be fun to see how they one-up those.

This is my main hope for USUM. SM lacked replayability due to the terrible dex being filled with 20-year old shitmons like Paras and Psyduck. It lacked flavour for such a dynamic region.

Alola has a lot of potential to include every single Pokémon, given its climate and real-world counterpart geographic location (Hawaii is in between Japan and the US which accounts for 5 regions' worth of Pokémon). It won't of course but there are many cool mons they could add:

Removing the National Pokedex from Sun & Moon allowed GF to create a "Disney Vault."

They can supress the existence of several hundred Pokemon from the eyes and minds of young players. Then, they bring back some from the vault for the next generation and remakes.

It keeps older Pokemon fresh for young players.
