It looks fine in a spin-off, and especially works in the context of a fighting game, but that art style and aesthetic doesn't belong in the main series. They will always keep the cartoon aesthetic, no matter how many more poly's they add or how higher the texture resolution goes.
All of the future Pokémon models being made for the mainline games will continue to follow the standard set in gen 6; those models are deceptively high poly and were made to be future proof, that's why they are taxing on the 3ds. Its a lot easier to create new higher res textures for already existing high poly models, than it is to create the models from scratch again, and have to skin them and rig them again too.
