it's great gary found a thing he really loves but there's literally nothing wrong with not giving up something you like if time and money isn't an issue

also there's a difference between never even making it past the worst ash ever did and losing in the semifinals to two legendary pokemon

Normally, I'd give credit to the anime for the change. You'd expect random kids to come to terms with reality at some point and realize there are thousands of people doing the same thing as they are, we can't all be the best. But then I realize they did nothing with that plot point and interesting dynamic.
