what if they introduced a new breeding mechanism where you have to get your pokemon to mate in specific ways to determine the nature of the egg. sex involving a lot of tummy rubbing could end up with a nature that gives a lot of hp for example, because a lot of high hp mons are tubby

Battle Commands, you can command your pokemon to take an in-battle action, other than attacking without wasting your attacking turn.
>order your pokemon to charge towards the enemy to do extra damage the following turn, but also recieve recoil
>order your pokemon to guard in order to recieve less damage the following turn, while also doing less damage that turn.
>order flying types/ pokemon capable of flight to take off/land. if they land, they lose the ground immunity but do extra damag, if flying they deal less damage, but are immune to ground type attacks and can complete moves like fly or sky attack in one turn. these attacks force the pokemon to land after they are completed.

I think incorporating some elements of turn based strategy games could be interesting -- movement in particular might freshen the battle system.

That's crazy enough to work. I think it would be a chance for pokemon to use their roles to the fullest: agro, support, defense etc. They will have to fix or ban some stuff like Fallow Me.

I don't think Pokemon needs a major change in formula, other RPG series like Dragon Quest and SMT have remained popular a long time with less variation to their core mechanics than what Pokemon got going from gen1 to gen2, Pokemon simply needs a single player that takes advantage from the actual depth Pokemon's combat already has.

A big chunk of pokemon's depth comes from ev and iv customization, which is really difficult to apply to singleplayer without it becoming grindy and repetitive.

Gen3 actually used theirs though and it remains just as in use. Heck, it's the official tournament format. It even made it into the card game for a while.

Triple/rotation/inverse/sky are joke gimmicks. Doubles is the real deal.

Which is why it needs a major overhaul.
Those games do well without changes because growth is fun, tactical, and largely modular.

In pokemon it's grind for levels, grind for the perfectest egg, grind money for tms, grind for evs. The journey to success is not one of enjoyable gameplay or many meaningful choices.

Not even memeing, even Digimon does this better, it just has astronomically large issues with lore and mechanical consistency.

The only party-training game I know that does it worse is Yokai Watch, where there are acknowledged "objectively betters" and no customization other than team composition, which is why they have so many recolors.
