What did Alain mean by this?

If they had them say this, why didn't they have Ash beat him in the finals? Do they pay attention to their own writing?

But Alain beat him in the tournament and walked away with the trophy. He had also beaten Ash in every battle they had.

If they wanted Ash to be ptotrayed as the "better" person, one would think they'd have Ash win against him in the league. Having Alain say that felt like a pretty cheap method of saying "yeah, we know Ash should have won the league but we're not allowed"

They wanted Ash to come out looking good, even though he deservedly lost. So they forced Alain's character arc into Ash's story, and made Ash the crux of his final developments.

They could have at least had Ash and his team look good during the final Team Flare battle, but even there Alain and his Charizard did as much if not more than anything Ash did. All that hype from Olympia about how important Greninja would be and all it did leave a mark for Alain to run to and save the day.

i mean they could at LEAST have him win a league, he doesnt even have to stay and battle the elite 4 or champion, but at fucking least he could win leagues and bring home something of value like first place trophies and actually be recognized elsewhere in the world as a competent trainer. the fucking corporate dicks would still get their shills, and Ash could at least be successful. Ash can turn down battling elites and champs till hes gotten a bit older, hell they couldve at least made him 11 in SM
