Triggerfish are known for big lips and big teeth, all the better to crunch up crustaceans and other hard-bodied invertebrates. They're also known for being very ornery, and the bigger kinds of triggerfish can be real threats if you invade their territory; they can indeed draw blood with a good bite.
The state fish of Hawaii is also the reef triggerfish (or humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa), and that particular kind of fish has a small second spine, which it can stick up to lock itself in place in its shelter, which can make it hard for predators or underwater storms to force it out. Of course, they replaced that in the game for Bruxish's flower-like bulb thing that emits psychic energy.
