Haven't played pokemon since the GSC remakes for the DS. Want to get back in, you guys said to avoid black and white, and to get B2W2. Its being shipped now.

What do I have to look forward to? Any notable pokemon worth catching for a first playthrough? Anything in particular worth paying attention to?

I don't think I want to do more than one play through of this game, as I want to use it as a means to transfer my pokemon to the 3DS versions soon.

You should've just emulated it. There's quite a bit of talking and some callbacks to BW since it's a sequel.

There's an NPC that will trade you a timid Syncronize Alakazam for Hippondow. Use it to get a usuable Latias, Reshiram, and Kyurem.

Do note that modern training is autistic about matching pokeballs so you'll want to catch Latias in a Pokeball while catching Reshiram in a premier ball.

Also go download Pokemon dream radar.

Pokemon games emulate like shit for me. I'm not the OP, but Platinum has these random black spots everywhere on the map, BW1/BW2 lags like a motherfucker, and HGSS freezes a lot.

This was using Retroarch and the Desmume core, but yeah.

The only ball with an effect outside of what happens when you catch a mon is a luxary ball. Some people breed return users in them to make them easier to get back up to snuff when transferred. Aside from that, it's all cosmetics.

Dream Radar is an app on the 3DS eShop that connects to BW2. It's an easy source of hidden abilities and lets you catch HA versions of the genies and the gen 4 cover legendaries if you have that cart. No resetting for nature though so if you want HA Ho-oH or Lugia, you'd be better off getting them from the GS VC release.

Most of the replies here are autistic, and whoever told you to avoid BW1 are just bandwagoning. BW1 is better in every field except postgame and pokédex size. BW2 won't be as good unless you play the originals first.

Otherwise, the majority of the dex is good. Don't get a Riolu unless you're a Sinnohfeotus; Lucario is available in every game, and XY will give you an opportunity to use one.

As for interesting mons to catch - once you get to Route 5 you'll see a lot of great mons. I highly suggest Sandile or Scraggy. Also, Chargestone Cave has Tynamo, which is really weak at first but is great later on once you evolve it twice, and Joltik, a fan favorite.

In the area south of Virbank you can find Magnemite (which everyone used on their first team through BW2,) Magby/Elekid (depending on version,) and Growlithe iirc.

Once you get a bit later on you can potentially find an Axew or a Deino, which are very strong Dragon-types that are both 3-stage. Deino takes forever to evolve, though.

If you're not opposed to objectmons, Celestial Tower has Litwick, which is a three-stage Ghost/Fire-type. Its final evo looks great and is very strong.

Also, Deerling is found just before Chargestone Cave, and while it looks rather girly, its evo is pretty cool, and it has a great level-up movepool.

Lillipup is actually a great mon to use if you so choose, for an early route mon it holds its own.

That's about all I can think of for now. Have fun! And BW2 will still be good even if you don't play BW1 first, btw.

I plan on playing X and Y nearly immediately after White 2, so thanks for telling me to avoid lucario. I know he is a strong pokemon (I played pearl/platinum) so I will give him a shot on the 3DS.

Thanks for listing off some mons, I loved Growlithe/Arcanine back in the gen 1 and 3, so it would be awesome to have him here too.

don't skip BW1 just cause vp meme'd you into thinking they're bad. I found them more enjoyable story-wise than BW2.

Although bw2 are great games content-wise, they are a sequel to the first and you'll get a lot more out of them if you play the first one.

If you play B2W2 first, you'll just won't understand the story completely (unless you already know the story). If you don't care about the story, then just play it. Alot of Pokémon are good, but I recommend you get Dunsparce. Also, find shaking grass to train your Pokémon with Audino (and maybe even use one, it is actually pretty good).

Hidden abilities are abilities only available via special circumstances, some are unavailable and many are a pain in the ass to get. Lots of pre gen 4 mons where given really good ones to compensate for the shit ones they got in gen 3 thanks to GF's lacking ability to design competitive Pokemon.

In BW2 for example, you can get a HA Eevee in post game, HA Eevees can turn into Espeon's with magic bounce. All Pokemon from the virtual console imports will have them for example and you can control those Pokemon's nature via their exp.

In caves, sometimes dust clouds will appear. You can get items from them, and a Pokemon called Drilbur, which is a really great mon. Seriously. Drilbur (and its evolution, Excadrill) is great.

They all look pretty lame, so I don't mind boxing them and grinding other pokemon in the grass. Typically when I play I go for 3 main pokemon and the rest are HM slaves, but I want to get away from that playstyle.
