As for Alain being edgy: yes and no. He's not edgy on his own, but rather it's Lysandre's influence that set him on a dark path, made him become distant from Sycamore, and made him miserable all the time. It also doesn't help that Alain's just kind of awkward. ("I don't want my girl to get hurt again, so I'll pretend I hate her until she leaves me alone.")
