As an example, back in 2012, I bought both Black 2 and White 2. I had already use Snivy in Black, Tepig in White and chose Oshawott for Black 2. And I thought "Well, what should be my starter for White 2?" I had right there a lv. 15 Keldeo from the events on one of the other games' boxes, and decided to use it. You get Secret Sword on the 2nd town. Obviously my run was pretty fast just for using Keldeo that early. Not that I didn't use other (regular) mons in the team, but yeah, whenever I had a bit more difficulty, I would simply switch Keldeo in and it would take care of it.
