While they didn't rectify many of the sins of the original (level curve, distribution, Kanto), but they did add a bunch that wasn't in the original games:

Didn't improve on RS's base in any way.
Had GF decided to use Emerald as a base like they did with Crystal and HGSS, we wouldn't be having this discussion because then ORAS would be the best remakes.
