I don't really watch the anime much, but when I do it's in Japanese, but only because I know the language. Watching both versions, I can say that the English version of the anime does do weird things. I think game-themed music gets removed and replaced in favor of more stock-sounding themes, for one thing.
At the same time, do people really watch things outside of languages they know? I can't stand watching Korean shows, since you can't just have them as background noise every now and then like you can with a language you know, so you have to be 100% engrossed in it.

Europe has many subbed media since we get lots of shows from America, but I also think anime is more popular subbed than dubbed because it is very static in terms of animation, so you're actually more engaged when reading than staring at the same two frames of someone "speaking" for a good ten seconds.
