The problem with Pokemon isn't that the new designs are worse, it's that the game design hasn't even changed.

It's that they've remade the same game a total of like 15 times. The first couple were cute, "Oh it's a Sentret instead of a Ratata, a Hoothoot instead of a Pidgey", but now it's just disgusting. Every game has it's Ratata and it's Pidgey, and so on and so on, and I don't understand how anyone isn't sick of the same formula over and over each generation.
Only way I'd buy another is if they made one with plenty of pokemon from all regions, rather than mainly having the new ones in the new games almost exclusively until post. There's more actual variation between COD games than successive Pokemon gens.

You can say that there are animal inspired mons in every gen. You can't say that the bulk of newer mons are animal inspired; and the reliance on just making some animal into a humanoid has become commonplace.

I can forgive the ultrabeast designs, they're supposed to be some eldritch looking shit; but there are too many pokemon in the last 3 generations that look like people in animal masks or that simply look like nothing in particular.

Landorus, Thunderous, Tornadus - genie shit with fucked looking animal forms
Genesect - robobug

Gen 5 reeled it back in, to it's credit.

I'm sick of typing, so I'll conclude that gens 6 and 7 are at least attempting to bring it back to animals with their legendary pokemon. We had 3 solid generations of weird space fairy shit and just dragons. However, overly flamboyant designs are still creeping their way into the game. Lycanroc midnight form almost looks like a decent pokemon design, but they just had to give it retarded eyes; it's like they can't help themselves.

And digimon always had more attempts at realistic monsters than pokemon ever had. Go compare agumon and charmander and tell me which one looks like it actually has muscles and organs.

Outside of the game code that was datamined, you can see this in SM with the color coded dex, normal is blue, sublegend is green, legend is gold.

legendaries are fantastical designs. arguing what they imply about the design philosophies of their generations is meaningless. the reason they were more effective was because of the simplicity of more common designs in earlier gens. having rattatas and pidgeys running around makes the ho-oh flying overhead that much more special. back then, "common" really meant common, and "rare" meant rare. of course, simple but iconic designs are not easy to make, which pokemon had.
