I'm not in denial, I'm conditioned to believe they will be bringing back as little as possible.

I'm honestly convinced this is exclusively available to the event Rockruff, or this is an overworld Rockruff only and isn't the player's.

Thats obviously a small feature to show you how lively alola is on your way to receive your starter (route 3 is still blocked)

SM has something similar when you can see a girl playing with Pikachu in the grass or some trainers battle their pokemon

When Game Freak started removing good features permanently for no fucking reason and replacing them with horseshit no one asked for or wanted. Not to mention the Rockruff's movement is a lot more dynamic instead of it just walking stiffly one tile behind the player, and surely you can understand why people doubt Game Freak would (or could for that matter) code something like that for 800+ different models when they can't even get double battles to not lag like shit.

They could code it once with how well the pokemon follows depending on the friendship stat, and just apply that for every model if the model information has a certain offset depending on their size determining how far the pokemon has to stay at a minimum.

While I understand your point, for me it was always a cool feature that made it feel more like you're in the Pokemon anime.

In HGSS it was also just funny to have a massive freaking legendary bird behind you while NPCs didn't give a fuck.

I'm not a fan of the feature. If it does return I'd prefer to be optional. If sage devs can code it, GameFreak should be able to.

In addition, having the option selectable in the pkmn menu would be nice. I not always want to lead with my follower.

Seems like a fair compromise to me.

Seriously though, what the fuck was the point of showing that footage? If following Pokemon is back, why couldn't they have been more clear about the feature returning? If it's not back, why show that footage in the first place as a massive hint towards the feature? Just to fucking troll? Neither option seems likely.
