So, is USUM considered Gen 7 or Gen 7.5?

Since when has GF ever patched new forms or evolutions to play with old games?
Deoxys, Girarina, ORAS megas... they all aren't compatible with old same-gen games. (Or they appear as normal sprites.)

gen 1 games can only battle with other gen 1 games
gen 2 games can only battle with other gen 2 games
gen 3 games can only battle with other gen 3 games
etc

it's the easiest and simplest definition that actually makes sense because the games need to be mechanically similar to be able to battle in the first place.

I guess calling USUM "7.5" is more acceptable than in the ORAS-era, since it actually has new dex numbers, but it's definitely NOT gen 8 yet.

please stop. Starters aren't any different from any other Pokemon and there's absolutely nothing stopping them from making more sets of new starters more frequently.
