Well, fuck... Never had a legit Celebi in game, so I guess I'm buying Gold or Silver. (Was thinking about buying one of them anyway, this just hammers it home.)

Will I be able to transfer it to Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon with PokeBank later if I want to? Don't think I can wait to the launch of those games to redeem the code.

I'm new to using PokeBank, and didn't get the games at launch. From browsing on here, I recall it took awhile to be able to transfer Pokemon up to Sun & Moon. I guess I was really wondering what kind of wait I'd be looking at?

That doesn't matter. If you have SM, you can immediately redeem the code, get your celebi, and transfer it to bank.

The code will appear when Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver is purchased in Nintendo eShop between September 22, 2017 and September 21, 2018. Enter the code by October 31, 2018 to claim Celebi in your Pokémon Sun, Pokémon Moon, Pokémon Ultra Sun, or Pokémon Ultra Moon game. Celebi will not be available for your Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver game

I preordered it on the eshop, you get the code by mail in a separate mail.
There is a code for the theme and one for the Celebi.
You can get the theme right off the bat, for celebi the code will start to be operative next week on the 22nd

As far as I know, with gold you get gold theme, with silver the silver theme.
