I just googled "/vp/ pro trainer card", and used this image.

Then I used GIMP and spliced the steel and fire type backgrounds and added the sprites from bulbapedia. You can find them by searching the page of the pokemon one before or after it in the dex and using the icon on the navigation arrows.

Tried to steer clear of the other Dark type trainers signatures (Umbreon, Absol, Bisharp, Persian) while also challenging each starter type.

I get that gambling is Grimsley's thing, but a card themed gym puzzle could be a neat way to get around the no gambling in Pokemon rule

I love Bug type Pokemon because they make me appreciate bugs all together. Scizor is my favorite Pokemon overall, so I wanted to build something around him with some of my favorite Bug types.

Beedrill is alright, but then Mega Beedrill is menacing. Araquanid reminds me of Bospider from Mega Man X. Armaldo is a favorite Fossil of mine. Rimbobee adds cutesy-ness to my team. Volcarona is a beast af moth adding Fire and more power to the team.

I might have Scizor a little early since I thought if Maylene can have Lucario by the 3rd gym then screw it I'll grab my Metal Coat from some Magnemite or whatever.

Switching Ludicolo, Exeggutor, Torterra, Shiftry, Jumpluff, Leavanny, and Abomasnow out robs the team of progression. Gourgeist and the Oddish Siblings grow and change and it's cool to see what paths they take. The rest feel thrown in. Bastiodon is the Rook because it's literally a big castlefaced castle.
Bronzong is the pawn, which is less obvious. I didn't want to use Pawniard because Bisharp was already on the team. Bronzong is a support with Screens and Trick Room, as well as Explosion so it can make that sacrificial play pawns are known for.

thanks for clearing that up :P I did think Bastiodon obviously fit the rook but Bronzong as the pawn was what through me because I thought Bastiodon is slow and Bronzong is also sort of tower-like, but yeah they fit the way they do. I feel Durant could have made a good pawn also because it seems minion-y if that makes sense? Great team anyhow anon :)

I'm feeling autie enough to do their counterparts for the paired pieces:

Second bishop= Lucario
Second Rook= Forretress
Second Knight= Skarmory

AND a rock team for the 'black' pieces:

You'd probably be better off with Ground.
Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Mudsdale, Claydol, Pallossand, maybe Dugtrio or Stunfisk as the pawn.

I'm bad at thinking of creative themes desu. But I made a full 18 trainer cards

Notes:
* Didn't use any starters or legendaries
* No family is repeated
* Bug and Steel trainers did the Karrablast/Shelmet trade
* Electric uses a different Rotom form for each fight, including potentially using the base form.
* Flying is the only one to have less than 6 mons of their type on the final team, because of using Mega Altaria.
* Some trainers do use mons not of their type in earlier battles just for flavor - Ground uses Nidorina, Fire uses Cubone, Fighting uses Ralts, a couple others

The gym wouldn't be inside, but a fenced off area. It would be a river and a couple dun-down shacks covered in moss/vines in a sunflower field. The leader would be in the largest shack with incense burning.

Nosepass and Machop are the start of the story. Young sailors who want to set off on a journey. They find a third to help them get their hands on a boat, then set sail. Over time the captain (now Probopass) and his first mate grow older and more mature. Then something attacks the ship and causes it to crash on rocks. The captain dies and the thing that attacked is now controlling pieces of their ship's debris and tracking them. The captain's ghost is resurrected and begins to tempt the others towards it. Shortly after the creature appears a horrible aura begins radiating from the shore, and Machoke begins to mutate, growing two additional arms and becoming more savage. After a time, another creature emerges from the tides and draws Machamp in, fully transforming him into Barbaracle. Shortly after this happens Mawile starts to give into the inevitable and begins to change, mutating further and further until finally the creature which had been controlling the soul of the deceased captain reveals itself (Tentacruel), fully mutating Mawile into Toxapex.

That's actually a really cool story. I can appreciate having such forethought behind such a team, especially the whole mutation and change angle, and how you used both regular and mega evolution for story telling, and explaining what it means. Overall, you probably have my favorite team out of the whole thread.

Feel like it makes more sense for the Nosepass to just be navigation tools which are lost or useless upon being stranded. Making him "the captain," having all this talk about resurrection and corruption, it becomes excessive and weird. Gym teams shouldn't have fanfics attached to them to make sense, just put thematically similar Pokemon in a pile. Jellicent and Dhelmise are spot on, and Toxapex is as fitting as anything else. Tentacruel, Barbacle, and Omanyte don't quite fit the theme of a shipwreck, putting aside the short story that fits them in.

Problem is, the idea is that each one of the original crew members becomes a fucked up nightmare each time a new horrifying aquatic creature appears, and the captain's ghost works in luring them because he's so trusted. Plus Jellicent and Probopass both look similar in the regard that they're giant heads with big mustaches.

Tentacruel and Omastar work because they resemble Eldritch horrors from the deep. Barbaracle looks like a mutated, abomination-like version of Machamp.

The theme isn't strictly "Shipwreck", it's Eldritch Horror.
