I remember an anon once suggesting they're supposed to be the Magnum Opus, the alchemical term for the creation of the philosopher's stone.
Necrozma is the nigredo (black)
Lunala is the albedo (white)
Solgaleo is the citrinitas (yellow)
And the last part is rubedo (red) which probably why Lunala and Solgaleo's shinies are red.
