I think it's supposed to emphasize that she's of Pokemon-Chinese descent. Since they're not going to do squinty eyes, they just add more flesh color around the eyes to give a similar effect.

Although the humor of Japan calling the kettle black is another matter.

Yes, I do believe Lana is of a Chinese or any Asian descendants with that stylistic choice. She and her family even lived in a oriental-inspired town.

Too bad the 12 sword users' character development is dropped in favour of the 2 main characters, Shichika and Togame! They're far more interesting imo.

Could just be a case-by-case stylistic choice.
Cilan's brothers don't have the same eyes as he does and Roxanne just has an irregular eye color but no white pupils.

Olivia technically has white pupils, but she's unhinged because they drew her with sanpaku (three whites) eyes. Look it up, it's an interesting thing.

I don't particularly like Lana's design, but having nonstandard/"ugly" designs in the mix helps reduce sameface, and makes the standard looking characters more attractive in comparison. Every girl looks like Lyra in a wig, or alternatively every male looks like Ethan in a wig outside of the obvious exceptions (Hiker, Hex Maniac, Cilan)

The no schlera thing helps her stand out more, especially in the anime where she has the same face as Ash, Lillie, and Mallow; Kiawe and Sophocles have unique faces, and Lana has unique eyes, but Ash, Lillie, and Mallow look very similar to each other

I've heard of eyes losing their light due to experiences, but not the sclera. That must be the next level. Perhaps Cilan has it too due to the guilt of being one of the Shadow Triad and coming up with elaborate lies explaining how he's not.
Would stage 3 be Lana's sclera returning, but dark?
