Take Gen I: Tauros is better than Persian which is better than Raticate - all fast physical attackers, pure normal. Golduck is better than Seadra, Arcanine is better than Rapidash, Jolteon better than Raichu, Machamp than Hitmonchan etc. etc. etc.
ALL of these Pokemon have different roles, even those that have the same typings (of which there are only four pairs - Decidueye/Dhelmise, Lurantis/Tsareena, Buzzwole/Pheromosa and Gumshoos/Komala). There was clearly a lot of thought put into these Pokemon, same with last gen. I'd much rather that than Gen V which just tried to make old Pokemon obselete
