The Gamecube games GREATLY streamline the process of completing the dex. You can almost complete the entire Pokedex with only Emerald, LeafGreen (not FireRed), and the two GCN games. The only real issues are:
>getting all three Hoenn starters, which can be done by starting a new game on Emerald, trading the starter to a gamecube game and restarting
>Latias/Latios, which can be done with an Eon ticket. Otherwise, you need to run through the game twice.
>the Kanto starters, because you can't trade with other versions until post-game. You either need a second copy of FRLG to trade the starters to before resetting or to just do three runs of the game
>the fucking Kanto fossils. There's no real workaround for them. You have to get to Cinnabar island on two separate runs if you want them both
>Slowpoke is only available in LeafGreen. If you only have FireRed, you're fucked.

Yup. GoD's Pokemon distribution seems like they intended on having every exclusive being available but they forgot about Slowpoke.

I legitimately caught Feebas and Chimecho without a guide but that's only because I got Feebas by super luck fishing and Chimecho because I was grinding my Duskull up on Mount Pyre.

I never caught Smeargle or Slugma until gen 3, but I was only like 7 during GSC.

Huh, for some reason I always thought you had to beat a Hoenn game too before you could link it with Orre, but you only need to beat the Orre game.

You're just proving how difficult it was. It used to be hard even getting a working Link Cable and two compatible GameBoys in the same room, let alone a GameCube and the adapters/cables for it. WiFi and genning make it all much easier now.

you would think that the eshop re-releases would allow you to complete the pokedex by making event and trade-only pokemon available, like megaman battle network did with multiplayer chips. but they didn't, you can't even trade between two did versions you own, AND they're not releasing crystal

one of the latter ones might be a gigantic pain in a vacuum but the fact that you can trade up from three onwards means anything from the gens prior to that one won't be as nightmarish since at least you can just trade it all in. gen 3 didn't have that convenience so you had to do all kinds of shit like replaying emerald 3 times to completion just to get the jhoto starters for example

Gen 3. It's the only gen where I never completed the dex. At least with gen 1 and 2 you could relatively reasonably glitch in Mew and Celebi, but if you wanted to complete the Gen 3 dex you're looking at hundreds of hours.

At least with the subsequent gens after 3, so long as you were following along you just had to trade up all your stuff from the previous gen. We're in gen 7 and I'm still completing the dex with stuff I caught way back in Ruby.

According to guides back in the day, GSC was missing a few fossil mons and some early-game 2-stages, if I remember correctly. I think meowth and mankey were among the Gen I exclusives.

Gen 3 is the the most difficult

You would probably need all the games imcluding GameCube games and go through multiple run throughs to complete it on your own.

Plus, wouldn't you need a special adapter to trade on the GC? Plus you had Pokemon like Feebas with dumb conditions to catch

Virtually impossible for a child to complete it
